    Do you want to meet other people who are as passionate as you in learning more about your Swedish heritage? Join a genealogy society or research group that focuses on Swedish research. There are Swedish-American genealogy groups in Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota and Colorado. The two largest groups in the United States are the Swedish Genealogical Societies of Minnesota and Colorado.

  • The Swedish Genealogical Society of Colorado (SGSC) is not only one of the largest groups but it's also one of the newest, having received its charter in 2007. The group started as a small study circle at the Denver Public Library and today brags about having more than 100 active members desiring to learn more about their Swedish roots. The society’s mission as expressed in their charter is to assist members in their genealogical research by: encouraging the pursuit and preservation of Swedish-American family research; collecting, sharing and disseminating knowledge related to Swedish genealogy; sponsoring events related to Swedish genealogical research resources, methodologies and culture; publishing materials that aid research of Swedish ancestry with a focus on immigrants and descendants living in the state of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region; and, collaborating with and supporting other genealogical and cultural organizations and libraries for the benefit of members and the general public.

  • Meetings are generally held the first Saturday of each month (except during the summer). Programs focus on topics related to Swedish genealogy, history or culture, including: research using the Swedish church books; accessing historic maps of Sweden online; learning techniques for preserving family documents; sharing stories of Swedish emigration and immigration as well as member successes and travels to ancestors' hometowns. One of the most popular events is the annual Christmas Julbord, a potluck featuring traditional Swedish foods and music.
    SGSC has sponsored annual Swedish Family Research Fairs in partnership with the Community College in Aurora. In September 2011, SGSC sponsored the SwedGen 2011 Research Day in Denver where five genealogists from Sweden shared their expertise with more than ninety Swedish-Americans.

  • In addition to monthly programs, the society provides members with individual research consultations and access to research resources. SGSC also benefits from several active members in the group who are Swedish immigrants to Colorado. The active membership in this new group demonstrates that a strong interest in Swedish genealogy, history and culture exists today in Colorado.
