Non-profit flies Syrian refugees to safety
A group of Swedish entrepreneurs and humanitarians is organizing Refugee Air to provide safe passage for Syrian refugees. The non-profit initiative, which has backing from both private and corporate donors, will charter airplanes or work with existing airlines to fly migrants from areas of unrest to safety in the EU. Due to an EU directive, legal restrictions have made it impossible for people without visas to travel with airlines, but with many donations, support from the crowd and cooperation with NGOs, there is hope this project can overturn that, and reduce deaths and otherwise risky travels in the hands of smugglers. Organizers expect to have the first airplane ready this fall. "We’re going to have a first airplane flying refugees to safety before the first snow falls over Stockholm," said Susanne Najaf, co-initiator of Refugee Air.
